Evolution of the
Microbial colonisation begins after birth and develops in four different stages:
» Birth: generates mainly lactobacilli and bifidobacteria.
» Lactation: breastfeeding promotes the growth of bifidobacteria, whilst artificial feeding encourages the development of more complex flora.
» Start of complementary feeding: microflora similar to that found in the adult stage.
» Start of adult diet: adult flora is gradually developed (from 1 to 4 years).
